Doug's Corner
I received a couple emails this month I want to address.
Another wondering about Shawnee clocks. The ones in the book seem to be undisputed. The question was whether there were other clocks made by Shawnee, specifically the Blue Bird and Four Seasons clocks. Do any of you have an option on these? I've always, for no finite reason, been under the impression they were a product of Hull/Regal Pottery. Please set me straight if you have better information. I'm sorry I don't have pictures of these clocks. Looking at them makes me think they are related to the Red Riding Hood series. Hmm - Louise Bauer, one time Shawnee designer may have been an influence here.
  The another follows -
"I happened across your website and thought perhaps you could assist me...  I am not a collector, but I am looking for a specific antique Shawnee Smiley Pig cookie jar, the one with just the blue scarf. It was something my wife grew up with on her family's farm. The original is
still with the family, but all color has since been worn away and I would like to find one with the original colors.
Your site was very informative and I can see that what appears to be authentic on eBay or elsewhere may not be the real thing.
Would you know of a reliable and reputable place for me to look for such a jar, or direct me to someone that could find one ? Thanks"
Well folks, does anybody have one that you can part with?  Contact me at  shawneeone@comcast.net

Just when you think you have it figured out, something comes along to make you wonder. This is from a longtime Shawnee (and others) S & P collector -
"Remember the tea kettle shakers we talked about? Got them today, but filler holes are 1/2" holes not 5/8".  Same size as older ones. Weight a tad lite, color a bit off. But size is about right . I still actually can't tell if Shawnee or not now that I got them. My instinct says they are not. But the other part of my brain says, don't be so sure. I am very tempted to send them to you and let you put on your site to see what you could find out.
Size is good
2 / 3 holes are good
filler hole placement / size and style good
Style of shaker kinda got valancia look on bottom half
Just doesn't quite feel right for weight"
There they are, anyone have any thoughts?

Still feels like summer here in Arizona - we are setting records - 108 today - hope most of you are enjoying a nice COOL Fall season!

A reader wrote in about seeing a picture of a Shawnee sailor with unique decoration -

"We're wondering if you happen to know if there were any of these that they called Popeye? Popeye is painted on his right side near his waistline. This scarf is a lighter blue and he has a mustache. We can't tell from the picture if this painting was under the glaze or not. He wasn't a gold one - at least we don't remember any rosy checks or gold on him.  "
Have any of our readers seen such a jar - my guess would be if it were decorated in such a unique way it would be in gold but that is strictly a guess - no telling what is out there to be found.  A couple of months ago friends bought a gold sailor on Ebay and were pleasantly surprised when he arrived. In all my travels, I have not seen sailors with added decoration! This one has a beautiful blue patch on his backside!!!
This month I was checking items on Ebay when I came upon a gold  trim Bo Peep pitcher - my first thought was the decals were placed in different positions then upon a closer look realized the decals were close but applied to a reproduction Bo Peep - so easy at first glance to miss some of these reproductions - makes it very difficult to be a new collector, I emailed  Doug about it as had not seen one before - he sent me this link about suppliers of the reproductions. Sickening how close some of these come!!!!
