Vintage Shawnee smiley pig cookie jar/ RARE grape/goldAn interesting pair on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. The fact that they were being sold by different sellers it is probably a case of ignorance of the facts. Same for the buyer/s ignorance in these purchases, to the tune of $625. Shazam !!!!

You are bidding on a scarce smiley the pig cookie jar by Shawnee in a grape pattern with gold trim. It is hand painted with a blue bandanna, clusters of grapes, and heavy gold trim. The detail is spectacular, and it is very rare to come across a cookie jar this old and have all the paint still intact. Displays very well and would make a great addition to any collection.
Condition is excellent, no chips, paint loss, or wear on the gold. There is a small tight hairline you have to look really hard to see, otherwise-PERFECT!! Please look at second picture toward the right center, nothing that takes away from the beauty of this magnificent authentic Shawnee cookie jar. The over all crazing gives it a nice vintage feel to it and will make a great conversation piece.
Stands approx. 11" tall, 6" wide and 7 1/4" long. Bottom is marked USA. Weighs 3 lbs. 6.3oz.
Q: This does not match the pattern of the "original" shawnee. What year was this made? Thank you. Apr-19-10
A: That I do not know, I bought it at an estate sale. There was another one that looked like it with a hat. It for sure has age to it, alot of wear on the base along with crazing. I have no idea what year, there was a tag on it that read Shawnee-Smiley the pig, grape pattern with gold trim and $400 on it. Thanks,

How much more change can we stand?
Spring is officially here but it is snowing in northern Arizona and other states as well. So many of you are eagerly awaiting the flea and antique markets that will be opening for the season.
How is this for a pleasant surprise from an Ebay buyer -

We bought a Jack Tar off eBay last week because the jar was in excellent condition and we were  thrilled with our low winning bid of $282.77. After we won the jar, we noticed in one of the pictures some blue lines coming up over his right sleeve that we had not noticed initially. Patch? Today the
jar arrived, and sure enough he's hiding more than a cookie behind his back!
This  is what makes collecting FUN - I don't think I have ever seen a sailor with extra decoration on him!!!!  Beautiful jar.

This weekend Mickelson Auctions in Freeman, Missouri is selling off Charlie Snyders cookie jar  collection - he was a major collector/dealer who passed away a couple of years ago - many rare jars, a lot of Twin Winton. I didn't get a chance to see what he had in Shawnee but know several people who were placing absentee bids on Metlox and other potteries. I think Barb Crews will post a final value list on her cookie jar site in a week or two so next month, I should have a link.

Collectors in Ohio came upon a wonderful collection belonging to the granddaughter of a former Shawnee employee - including some pictures of unusual pieces in this collection - unusual prototypes - more to come next month with more photos but this is all we could put together on short notice.
There will be additional history to follow and possibly a list of some items for sale - will have the collector write his own story for next month's newsletter about the discovery of this rare  assortment.
Until next month,
