SHAWNEE TALES
Archives
by Linda Romberg
Pottery Festival has come and gone once again - heard from several collectors that it has really shrunken to a very small scale both in buyers and in sellers. Sad, as in it's hey day it was a fun get together with phenomenal pottery there each year!!!  There was a large auction at Alvin's shop across from the Days Inn - he had been a fixture in collecting in the Zanesville area - not a lot of Shawnee or cookie jars but enough to intrigue the true collector. However, he had the most amazing pieces of  Roseville - jardinaires to baskets to vases.  One thing about Pottery  Festival - it was so easy to spot another pottery, become fascinated then branch out into another collection.  An education in vintage pottery!
More on the Larry mcckoy4u2 saga, A "friend" and co conspirator of his was in Zanesville bragging about their repairs and golding of McCoy and Shawnee pottery - even flashing pictures of the work.  Allegedly this guy buys a lot of the pottery for Larry to work on then sell on Ebay to unsuspecting buyers. Really pathetic and maddening  for collectors of both potteries.
This excerpt

"I don't  know what to think, nor what to do, but I would find some pleasure and satisfaction by better exposing this newly touched up McCoy and Shawnee. A collector who attended is/was a McCoy collector - retired but younger than Larry. I suspect he is getting a cut for being the purchaser/mule. Maybe Larry thinks that people won't put the pieces together if he isn't seen buying them.  In fact, I don't know that Larry knows this guy showed people pictures. Maybe  Larry would be surprised to hear him is bragging as Larry denied repairing the piece a collector bought and returned. "
Great mystery novel. "A Pottery Mule and a McCoy Jack Ass."  I'll get on it.

"fellow collectors who attended Pottery Festival in Zanesville, Ohio, this July were amazed to see scads of  photographs of Larry's handy-work. It was also well known that white McCoy  chicken pitchers were one of the target pieces. Expect to see newly decorated chicken pitchers appear on eBay with "rare" decals, artwork and probably gold  trim. Don't be fooled. These pieces were not decorated at McCoy. They were  bought recently and reglazed."
The title of each picture indicates the problems with the piece. I believe the photo "hairline stem back" is probably the most telling, if it shows up. It is a picture of a hairline, covered in darker brown green (like the stem, but not  like the leaf) and then totally glazed over.
Grape wall pocket –
Also, the picture of the chip, whether you can tell or not, the chip is covered in glaze, so we know it was glazed after the chip occurred.
The fruit wall pocket is made from two pieces being joined - the grapes being one piece and the leaves being the second piece (and the leaves being the same as in all of the fruit wall pockets) I couldn't get this to show in a photograph, but you can  definitely mention that there was purple glaze under the grapes where it touched the leaf part. Since McCoy would have
dipped each of these pieces separately, it would be highly unlikely - I guess not completely impossible - but highly unlike that wet purple glaze would touch the leaf after the leaf was  glazed green. It is most probable that happened recently in attempts to repair and reglaze the item.
Many Shawnee collectors have broaden out to Little Red Riding Hood collections on the side.  Louise Bauer was involved in production of both lines and often times there are decals decorating pieces in both lines –  the most often desired seems to be the poppy decal – here are some pictures of pieces with them. There is also a sugar basket with this decal but unfortunately NOT in my collection!!!!
Until next month.  Happy collecting.
