SHAWNEE TALES
Archives
Go to - Moment
Spring is finally here, at least in the Southwest - sunshine and 85 degree
days - I have heard California is just as nice so the antique markets
there will be picking up.  A cookie jar collector friend has been on a Winnie
streak - in fact he is looking for a gold  trim Winnie head if anyone happens
to have one - it is the gold base with the red lacquer trim so could use
any of the Winnie lids, blue, peach, green or red  lacquer. He would prefer
any other than blue because a couple of weeks before he came upon a mint
gold blue collar Winnie.

I promise not to share every single jar we buy, but I had to share one we
found at the Long Beach Antique and Flea Market on Sunday.

We found the jar in the first ten minutes of walking about. It was the
only piece of pottery in the dealer's booth and judging from all the furniture
in the booth, we guessed the dealer specialized in furniture.

The jar appeared to be in gorgeous condition and after checking it over
carefully, I asked how much? He replied $75.00. I about died then I asked if
there was any room on that price? (Hey! why not?) and he replied that he
felt it was worth $75 because it had gold on it. I agreed and paid quickly.

Jar? Gold-trimmed Winnie with blue collar. Excellent condition with a small amount of gold loss.

Our old "buddy" MccKoy4U2  is back up to his creative work again - this
time with a totally fake yellow bib - note the phoney rosy cheeks and the
bottom is an apple or plum but definitely  NOT AUTHENTIC.  Low starting price of $9.99 so some unsuspecting newbie will fall victim to this jar - seems to be no stopping  Larry............

I had a note from a collector who visits our site regularly for identifying fake pieces - so good to hear that Doug's site is helping new collectors and even dealers identify pieces correctly.

Hi  Lin.. hope you're still around....I have your website in my "favorites" to reference on occasion whenever I have get a piece at auction that I'm not sure about...got a salt & pepper shaker set recently that I really thought was Shawnee's Smiley, but I want to be 100% sure before I put them in the store to sell as such. I've included pictures below. I posted these on the ebay Pottery & Glass discussion board asking those folks, and someone came back and said they were fakes based on "all indications"...the person didn't  give me any specifics. My set sure looked like the pics in my Shawnee books...but then I started researching the internet and was amazed!!! at how many are for sale, and even the novice I am, I could tell many of them were fakes. But what also threw me, was seeing some being sold as "Shawnee Style Smiley" that appear to be a really good copy....so that's why I posted my  pics on the ebay board to try and verify if they were real or fake.  I  posted back on the discussion board asking for more details about what "all  indications" were to the one who responded that the were fakes, but they never answered back.  So I found your email address at the bottom of the NOT SHAWNEE web site and thought I'd give you a try.
I'm a dealer and resell mostly in my brick/mortar store, but do sell a few items on the internet.  I have 2 reference books on Shawnee (as that's one of the many things I trade in, so I'm sure no expert, mostly getting some of their vases and planters). Thanks much in advance  for any help you can give me.These are just over 5" high (so I guess they are the Range S&P)...one has 4 holes, the other has 5  holes.

Thanks so much for your help Lin!  I really appreciate...still  can't figure out why that ebay person came up on the discussion board and said  "all indications are they are repros."...never did get back on to give the details...Glad you're still around!  Your web site is still being used by those of us who care.

Her shakers were red bib plain range shakers and authentic - no idea why
someone thought they were fake - but  reassuring to have someone to check
with us when in doubt.

For those of you have been collecting for many years, you may have heard Charlie Snyder, long time collector of all cookie jars passed away a couple of years ago - he was a major collector/dealer, a wealth of information and always willing to share with others.  I first met Charlie when another cookie jar friend mentioned she had had a Smiley with hair - which she had traded to another dealer for other jars - well, when I called this dealer he had already traded it for other jars to Charlie so gave me his phone number and the rest is history - we became great friends, for years we kidded that
Harry needed to spend winters in Arizona for the nice weather, then one year just before Christmas he phoned me to say Harry wanted to retire in Arizona - I was thrilled as had yet to find another Smiley with hair. This one also has the hand painted rust and green  flowers near the hooves below the bib.
Over the years I have been almost entirely a Shawnee collector but would shop for  other jars for Charlie then send him several jars at a time - he was an avid fan of any of Don Winton's work and I could find a lot of Winton as well as Metlox jars.  Gave me something to look for when not finding Shawnee locally and he in turn helped me find pieces for my collection. There are so many memories to this hobby and so many cherished friendships over the past thirty years.

The final auction of his remaining jar collection is coming up May 1 and 2 at Mikelson's Auction in Freeman, Mo - wish I lived nearer to attend - I am sure there will be a lot of long time collectors there as well as some phenomenal cookie jars and go-withs. They are just beginning to load photographs on the auction web site - well worth the time to tour the wonderful display of jars. I have a video tape that Charlie sent me years ago of  several hours of him taping his collection - we spent a couple of hours on the  phone as I watched it because I had so many questions as to which certain jars were and would say what's to the left of this jar or the right of another. Have never seen so many jars under one roof - he had a huge building on his land with shelf after shelf.
