SHAWNEE                  TALES

Merry Christmas from the Shawnee Choir
Where did this month go - Doug just reminded me the end of the month is here and I need to send him a newsletter!!!!!!   A sure sign we are getting - older when the months fly by so fast anymore.

Interesting jar just closed on Ebay - it was a Sailor with a hand painted bug on the side of his cap and went for almost $300 even with a big chip on the front of his cap - we don't see too many additions on the sailors so lots of interest in him. Last year we featured one with a blue patch on his backside.
As seen on Ebay
Currently listed is a Polly Ann Popcorn set with the original packaging. The seller purchased it as a seven piece set but the seller he bought it from had included a pair of salt and pepper corn range shakers to make the seven pieces - he did not know it should have come with a can of Betty Zane
popcorn and just one salt shaker. He lowered his price and the package is still worth money as these seldom show up. When I contacted him that the set was incomplete he instantly posted the information on the listing and lowered  the starting price from $300 to $200. Nice to meet up with ethical sellers.

By the way, the Smiley I had purchased and returned from Yoder auction in Wisconsin with an undisclosed repair showed up last month listed on Ebay - the seller was not a pottery expert but was contacted by one of our readers with the information reported in our newsletter - he posted the information so as not to misrepresent the jar - it had a beautiful lid with painted hearts covering a couple of minimal firing imperfections. Had the small pink flowers that are so hard to  find.

Years ago I was walking through a local mall where a dealer was setting out some corn pieces - it was the popcorn set and we got to talking -  she mentioned she found the set in it's original packaging - I asked about it  and her reply was "Oh I threw the box away and popped the corn"  She had no idea she disposed of the most valuable parts of the set - as collectors we love coming across original packaging but it doesn't happen very often.

About fifteen years back in Zanesville at Pottery Festival in an auction there was a Brush large turtle sprinkler yard ornament - it came with the original box and foolishly the auctioneer sold the turtle separately then the box by itself - I think the box brought only $20 or $25 - he should have
combined the box and the turtle. By the way - another Shawnee collector took home the turtle, took me a couple of years to find mine - so many of us seem to get distracted by other pottery while on our search for Shawnee - I have collected the Brush frogs and turtles ever since seeing them at Pottery  Festival - what amazed me was people there back then actually had these pieces OUTDOORS in their gardens and on their lawns - can you imagine that?

Would love to hear from any of our readers who have original packaging, maybe you could share some pictures???
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas  and a joyous holiday season. Including a picture of Amaryllis in bloom and a Betty Lou Nichols Santa Claus I discovered on my hunt for Shawnee.
Until NEXT YEAR!!!!!
