SHAWNEE TALES

Doug's Corner
Against all odds of getting an answer, I ask this question - Do you know who marked this elephant creamer?
The Howdy below is easy to identify as a reproduction.
I even got this one right the first time.
I just rediscovered these pictures, sent by readers a long time ago, that got lost in my cavern full of pictures that I've never dealt with. Some folks feel quite sure these ashtrays are Shawnee, I need a little more convincing. What do you think?     Let me  know
Dog Days of August are here already. No news from those of you on the antique trail as  to recent finds this summer - too hot in Arizona to be hitting any flea markets. I am hoping to be in San Diego & Los Angeles in late September so plan to check out whatever local shows and flea markets are scheduled.

There is a Smiley with hair listed on Ebay right now.  All of us are so suspicious with the tampering but this one looks legitimate - will be interesting to see what it closes at in this market. Early last  month a blueberry Winnie closed at over $700 so the good jars still bring  good prices.
Below is a similar Blue Berry Winnie
Did any of our readers attend this years Zanesville Pottery Festival in Ohio - I have not heard from anyone about it.  I think all of the shows have dwindled quite a bit with the economy  and the expense for dealers setting up at these shows.  Ebay has made it so  much easier for everyone to sell their goods. I miss all the camaraderie of the Pottery Festival - it was like a big reunion of collectors each summer.

In Barbara Crews Cookie Jar Newsletter there is a delightful story about two collectors travelling to an estate sale in southern California for cookie jars - it sure took me back to the early days when I would do crazy things like that - can't tell you how many times I would leave Arizona around one in the morning to meet a friend at Pomona for the street fair or Long Beach  flea market - would antique all weekend and manage to get home in time to sleep a few hours before going to work Monday morning!!!!  Definitely a story you  will each enjoy reading about.

Below is the most recent newsletter from  Barb - many of you might like to subscribe to it as all of seem to get distracted with other jars while hunting for Shawnee - also a link to the  newsletter. Interestingly Barb is the only one to report seeing Shawnee at a local flea  market...................................
Went  to the flea market today and there sat a beautiful Smiley and
Winnie with no  price on them. I asked and was told they were sold
already - $100.  each.   That's what I get for going to the farmers
market for  veggies first. I knew eating vegetables was going to
backfire one  day.

Crumbs from my jar....

This month I've had my share of shoddy  jars. It's my fault, I should have
followed my own advice and checked stuff out  more carefully, especially
when it's a bit too good to be true.  But then  something great happens and
makes me realize how nice most folks are ... see  below!

The first shoddy jar was one that only cost $11. including  shipping. Too
good to be true? Especially since it was an advertising jar that  I've never
seen before and thought I had a real find.  Well it's a jar  that's not even
worth $11. including shipping. Extremely sloppy glaze and paint  work.  The
gnome looking jar (as it was advertised) was actually a beer  meister
sitting on top of a barrel of beer from an actual beer company. The  company must
have been too embarrassed to offer them, as they've been selling on  eBay
by someone who has a bunch of them, for $5.95 each.

The  second  jar that was disappointing was a Little Red Riding Hood bought
on  eBay. Yes it was authentic and yes I noticed a dark spot on her hood in
the  listing, but it looked like a spot of dirt, perhaps the way the
lighting was. It  didn't bother me. Well, when I got the jar the entire hood was
covered in black  spots, it almost looked like a polka dot pattern. Nothing
was said in the  auction description, which was very disappointing to me. No
I didn't complain to  the sellers, as I was so shocked that nothing was said
that I was (believe it or  not) beyond being coherent.  But I will use it
as an example and will keep  notes in my little book!

YONA ELEPHANT WITH CLOWN
This is a great  jar, not often seen for sale. I don't know too much behind
the history of the  company or designer, besides the fact that the company
was based in Los Angeles,  along with the names of the owners. Any help here?

Check it out -- the  auction ends on Thursday and it's one that I would
probably buy if I hadn't  scared and scarred my grandson for life of clowns.
It's a sad story, but let it  be said I will never be allowed to take him to
the circus again and sit on the  first row.

THE THRILL OF THE HUNT
What would  you say about two guys, both  over six feet tall and spending
the night  sleeping in a Saturn -- all for the sake of some cookie jars at an
estate sale.  Probably not worth it is what most folks would say. But what
if the haul wound  up including a $40. Muggsy, a $12. McCoy Baseball Boy,
$12 Starnes Froggy Goes a  Courtin among others??  Hmmm your tune would
quickly change. The best part  is I will soon be the owner of the McCoy Baseball
Boy. Read Brian and Gary's  story, I'll bet we all have something in our
collecting hunts that might be  similar, care to share?

LITTLE RED RIDING  HOOD
As mentioned in last month's newsletter, we've been working on the  Little
Red Riding Hood gallery of jars. Whew, it's amazing the different decals,
baskets, etc. There are 29 pictures of different Little Red Riding Hood jars,
most of them are Hull and Regal jars - with a few others from Pottery
Guild,  Brush, etc. also shown.

SPOTS ON HOOD
Here is  a picture of the Little Red Riding Hood jar I purchased on eBay
with spots on  it. I've had a couple of responses on what causes the spots -
what do you  think?

one that Don picked out when they first were listing  items)

COLLECTIBLE FORUMS
The forums have been a bit busier than usual  lately. Brian P. has been
posting some notes, which in turn gets others posting.  Right now we have two
interesting threads going on.

SHARE YOUR RECENT  FINDS - http://bit.ly/z1EJH
CAN YOU IDENTIFY THIS JAR -  http://bit.ly/9le9q
RARE AND HTF JARS - http://bit.ly/OHqlq

Please  join the conversations and remember how much fun it was to share
finds? Perhaps  telling what you're looking for or even advertising jars you
have for sale. I  think I'm going to post a note with my Holy Grail jars -
and I do have a  few.

COOKIE JAR PICS AND PRICES

Tony &  Loreen Burns have been dealers for many years, I always check out
their eBay  listings. Plus Tony has been nice enough to let me use his

great pieces.
The Burns - http://bit.ly/mygCP

Peggy S. is someone I've just started  chatting with, but looking at her
inventory was like looking at the treasures at  the Nashville cookie jar shows
- so many jars that I picked up there. check out  her eBay shop.
