SHAWNEE TALES
Page 2
As for who would grab which pieces of pottery if they had to evacuate -
would you believe we had only ONE  response!  Does that mean the rest of
you wouldn't take a special piece with you?????

Hi Lin,

Oh Boy, which Shawnee pieces would take if I had to evacuate my house?  Well I guess the Muggsey with the green bow and the blue/purple Chanticleer pitcher from Dobbs Ferry.   Wow, from Florida gee, the redhead Smiley CJ,     GT Clover bud water pitcher and all the goldstuff.  I’m sure I would have more warning in Fla and would have time to pack into the SUV.

Regards

Teri
For myself, I would have to grab the red headed Smiley and the green Winnie
bank jar - quite a few more if I had to time to pack the SUV!!!!!
Rhonda and Bear Olson sent pictures of a couple of Shawnee finds - wait
until you see  the gold trim Lucky with extra flowers on the front legs AND the
bug on the  trunk - a real beauty. Smiley with roses is a beauty as well.

"Got lucky (no pun intended) today and picked up a couple of very nice
cookie jars. Lucky has a bug on his right tusk and hand painted flowers on his
shoulders. Smiley is just a very nice Roses jar."
Reg emailed about a gazelle planter - one  I have never seen in person - it
is featured in Pam Curran's book on page  169 - she shows it in both stain pink and white on the black bases  -  says circa 1955 identified as gazelles.  In Mel and jean Gibson's  collection.

Reg is downsizing his collection - if  anyone is interested or could help him price this piece please contact him at  rlennox@telus.net

Next month we  will revisit the subject of apples vs clover bud - we covered it back in 2003  and still get inquiries regarding the differences as well as what many of us  have nicknamed the raspberry jar for identification clarification  purposes.
Happy collecting,

Lin                                                                  linromb@aol.com

Two quick notes -
One - The final word on the damaged in shipping Lobster dish discussed in the Jan 08 Newsletter.
"Well, I finally got paid off (sort of) on this deal, $35.85 = $27.00 (value seller put on insurance form less the $1.65 paid for the insurance plus the $10.50 postage, so I'm still out $1.65. (USPS does'nt refund that cost) and would not have paid poostage if item had not been totally destroyed.  They also really wanted to keep the item (but I argued that I could'nt have it restored unless I kept it.  Usually they won't pay restoration costs if it exceeds value.  Had the value been over $50.00 I would have had to deal with central claims in another state rather than the local PO. Also, I was told that they might deny the claim because there wasn't 3" of clearance and padding around all sides and edges of the article, but the girl actually looking at it didn't mention that or was un-aware of that rule.

Lesson: always put the largest amount down as vaule that you can for what you buy ($50 for $1.65) putting less puts you at a disadvantage from the get-go, always eaiser to justify larger amt. later, Insure for more than amount paid and include shipping cost in that amount, if shipment is ony partially damaged, they won't refund shipping.
If item is one of a kind, over insure then you'll probably have to fight about the value.  I'm not sure how that would work, the other day, I saw two identical items sell on ebay days apart, one for $1500 and one for about $600 (1987 old world santa lights) how do you convince USPS what the value is?  Probably best to ship high value or one of a kind items with FED EX or UPS, at least they have motovation to want to continue to do business with you."
Two - The following is Ole Larry's response to a seller's inquiry about the gold trimmed Bicycle Built for Two Planter recently on Ebay.    Item number: 330213444681
"HELLO xxx I AM NOT SURE I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY LATER.. AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW THERE WERE INDEPENDENT DECORATORS THE BEST KNOWN ONE WAS SHAFER WHO PURCHASED POTTERY FROM SHAWNEE AND MCCOY AND APPLIED GOLD AND OTHER DECORATION SHORTLY AFTER THE POTTERY WAS MADE AND RESOLD TO JOBBERS.. IF YOU MEAN WAS THE GOLD RECENTLY APPLIED LET ME ASSURE YOU IT WASN'T..WHILE THE GOLD SHOWS A MINIMUM OF WEAR THERE IS SOME TO CONFIRM THAT IT HAS BEEN WASHED A FEW TIMES.. ALSO xxx YOU HAVE DONE BUSINESS WITH ME BEFORE AND I THINK YOU KNOW THAT WHEN YOU HAVE THIS PIECE IN HAND AND FOR ANY REASON UNHAPPY WITH IT YOU CAN RETURN IT NO QUEATIONS ASKED FOR A FULL REFUND PLUS YOUR COST TO SEND IT BACK.. HOPE THIS HELPS BEST LARRY

This probably explains the reason for his low negative feedbacks. That and I suppose buyers not realizing or wanting to admit they've been had. As I recall he told Lin - let the market decide. Gheez ------------  Think about the next time the piece gets sold, by a "long time Shawnee collector" will you be the recipient? Or will it be bought by a spouse or friend as a gift? Happy Birthday from Larry.
My evavacuation piece, I think, would be the little guy.
