Everyone is busy with the start of summer, planning vacations and antiquing
trips - we didn't get very many ads this month - we can't keep the classified
section going without contributions!

Pottery Festival is coming up next month is Zanesville -  Lora Short is
planning to have a get together for Shawnee collectors at their motel room -
here's a copy of her note

"Lin - just finished  reading the newsletter.  I have a few lamps and was
glad to see the information.  One of the first I bought - just as we
were starting to collect Shawnee - was the locomotive and I bought it
just because I liked it  at a local garage sale.  Had no idea that it was
Shawnee until I saw one in Eldon Culp's shop the next summer.  And I
though $40 was a lot of money, little did I know.  I do have a colonial
pair somewhere in a box that I don't think are Shawnee, but they are a
nice set.
We plan to be in Zanesville on Saturday the 8th and will stay at
least through Tuesday. In the past we have hosted the get-together on
Monday which would be the 10th this year.  We have a suite at the
Comfort Inn which is just off I-70 - I'm not sure of the exit #, but it
is the eastern most exit that takes you into Zanesville.  I will check
it out."

May 31 an additional note from Lora

"Hi Lin - I finally found a map that had the exit # and I hope it is
right.  I have exit 155 that should take you to Underwood St. or Routes
60 and 146.  Coming from the east it is easy - come off the interstate,
go right and the Comfort Inn will  be on your right. Coming from the west
you exit the interstate heading to the right and then make a left hand
turn at the first street and continue to Underwood.  I am sure there is
a stoplight at Underwood.  Go left  there, back under the interstate and
the Comfort Inn will be on the right.  There is a restaurant in front, I
think a Bob Evans.  If anyone keeps going on Underwood and crosses the
river, they have gone too far.   Also in the area is a Hampton Inn, just
to the left of the Comfort Inn, an Olive Garden, and at least one other
restaurant.  It sounds complicated,  but really isn't hard to find.

The routine: we will be in our rooms by 6:00 PM.  I usually say 7:00
as a start time,  but come anytime after 6. If you can, bring lawn chairs
as seating is somewhat limited if several come.  We have a suite, so
there is a large room and plenty of space.  I will have some snacks -
pretzels, crackers, cheese, and will have glasses, ice, and a selection
of soft drinks.  If I remember, I will take something to make ice tea
in.  If you want  anything else, bring it along.  All we have ever done
is sit and talk. Very informal. Bring along a goodie to show off  or
something you have a question about.  No one has brought things to sell,
but don't hesitate if you have something.  (Especially gold or  bug
trimmed Smiley Pigs for Larry)  The room will be open till only Larry
and I are left.  I will post something at the entrance to let people
know where to find the room.  There are no requirements - just people
who love pottery, Shawnee in particular.

Feel free to give my email.  I hope we have several show up.  Maybe a
notice on the newsletter will bring some people.  I know many motels in
Zanesville are full. The Hampton Inn was when I called there.  The
Holiday Inn east of town is always full as is the Red Roof (which I
think is a Best Western now).  If anyone emails me, I have somewhere a
list of motels in the area - I will hunt it up.

I can't think of anything else.  Hope you get to come this  year."

Please refer to  the May newsletter (or  www.Potterylovers.org ) for links to the Pottery Festival information from last month.  At this point, not sure I will make the trip but I have been known to decide at the last minute and show up!  Would be great to see everyone.

For those of you who have never been - the Zanesville and  surrounding area
malls really load up on pottery for the Festival, there are  people set up at
the Ceramic Center and various other outdoor areas selling  assortments of
pottery throughout the area.  A lot of the hotel/motel  rooms are open house in
the evenings with many collectors/dealers selling and  trading pottery. Signs
in the lobby of each hotel usually will have a list of rooms having items for
sale. Usually some good auctions during the  week. Spectacular pieces of
vintage pottery - even if just a Shawnee  collector, you will see amazing pieces
of Roseville, Weller, McCoy, Real, Abingdon plus others including some
California potteries - usually a nice selection of cookie jars of wide variety -
but it is hard not to find yourself  becoming interested in another pottery line.

Ebay has been kind of quiet with sales being soft in general - the abundance
of fake gold Puss N Boots is alarming - the pictures of some of them are so
misleading - study the decals in the books and don't get caught buying a fake
- that and the Jo Jo clowns can be so confusing - Doug has pictures posted
to help everyone identify the fake vs genuine.

Speaking of pictures - have several of a friends collection that I am
certain all of you will enjoy.

Pottery adds so much to our home, the  friendships we make along the way
enrich each of us - so much enjoyment to share  - so many of us have and CAN talk for hours about the past finds, differences in decoration and the thrill of
finding certain pieces we have anticipated finding  for years. Lots of memories
built in to our collections.

Hope this  summer brings everyone some terrific finds at the antique markets.
PLEASE  send pictures of your finds!!!!

Until next  month
