Shawnee  Tales
Spring is here in Arizona - actually we have had the mildest winter I can recall - hard to believe when so much of the country is still in the midst of winter weather - will definitely affect some of the early flea markets in the Midwest and East! I still have tomato plants over a year old producing!
No contributions this month - still hoping for readers to send pictures of their displays and collections - all of us enjoy seeing how other collectors show off their pottery!!
Years ago I managed to assemble the Penn Dutch almost complete set - I say almost because I was never able to add the batter pitcher! When I first began collecting it was just a rumor that it existed as no one had ever found one - it was on a catalog Xerox paper that several passed around, but we never knew if it was ever produced - then lo and behold one was found in the Northeast - later heard of two others - in fact one collector actually found two - how lucky can one be???? Pam's Shawnee Encyclopedia has extensive information on pages 136, 137, and 138. I chose to go with just the Penn Dutch pattern, but the pieces also come in these solid colors, blue, green and yellow -- Have never heard of the batter pitcher being in solid colors - have any of our readers ever seen or have one? For me the round handled teapot was the hardest piece to find. Cute story about the cookie jar - I was in San Diego one summer and on my way out of town stopped at a cluster of antique stores en route - the one shop that did not open until noon instead of the usual ten - right in the front window sat the cookie jar with a sale sign of $25 - well you know I sat there waiting until the shop open to purchase it!!!!

In the days before eBay it was certainly more difficult to locate pieces but definitely more fun networking and getting to know serious collectors! Phone bills were several hundred dollars a month!
Until next month -----

Shawnee Cornware 101: You ole timers are aware of this stuff. To the new collector - NOT VINTAGE SHAWNEE!  This seller has been selling repro Shawnee for years. There is no bald-faced lie here, but it ain't our Shawnee.
The original Shawnee Pottery didn't make a Corn King sugar shaker. The original shaker was in the White Corn line and marked U.S.A. on the bottom.
