Shawnee  Tales
Sept 2015
by Lin Romberg
Fall is just around the corner, hoping everyone is looking forward to the holidays and saying good-bye to the summer heat.

We've had some interesting auctions on Ebay this past month - the clown with blocks planter we featured in last month's newsletter, one like them listed on Ebay and sold for $125.  Also the Scotty dog with the cold painted sling sold for $36 - it was in literally factory mint condition like the Mumpy Kitty a collector found in June,  Hard to find pieces.  Nice to see a renewed interest in the planters and smaller pieces.  They certainly take up a lot less space than the cookie jars!

Second listing for the gold chanticleer lamps which didn't sell again.  These are extremely rare - I recall when the Mangus Shawnee pottery book came out all the interest in their gold chanticleer teapot, none of us had ever heard or seen one before.  The chanticleers have always been a favorite of mine and about fifteen years ago I found a lamp - no shade but it is the same mold, a teapot chanticleer with lamp works - interestingly the seller also had a pair but broke one of them so sold the second as a chanticleer pitcher.  The ones listed on Ebay had what appears to be the original shades though not very appealing in my opinion and a slight difference from mine - there is a hole drilled for the electrical cords where mine just has the electric cord coming out a slight indentation on the back of the lid near the handle. Curious if these will sell if relisted.
Don't write this pair off because of the color. The gold pieces are VERY hard to photograph. In the pic at the right you can see the glossy gold.
Received some pictures of collectors display - gorgeous assembly of jars, etc.
Also some finds of pieces that would have been shakers but were never drilled to be used as shakers - only one I have found over the years is the small green Winnie but a friend found the flower pots in Zanesville with no holes.

Another collector had posted some pictures on Facebook about items in Zanesville during Pottery Festival - the white elephant teapot was on a collectors want list so he was traveling and stopped in Zanesville and actually located the teapot that had been photographed in a cabinet to complete his set.  Surprising since it was not long after Pottery Festival - also found a gold and decaled water pail grease jar for a bargain price!
We could use some pictures of readers collections to share.

Until next month.  Happy collecting.
