Shawnee Tales
Nov 2013
by Lin Romberg
Last month when I was discussing the gold animal figurines, I didn't show the picture of the complete set I had heard about as couldn't locate it on my computer - here it is........

  Extremely hard set to assemble!!!!
Interesting pair of pie birds sold on Ebay this past month - many of us a stymied by the manufacturer of the rooster - have heard over the years that Shawnee made one but have never seen one or a picture - general consensus is it is likely Morton - do any of our readers know?????  Brought an extremely high price - not certain if it because of the pie bird collector or the possibility of being Shawnee.

Have a collector who is really hoping to find a red headed Granny Ann if any of our readers have one for sale, please contact me and I will put you in touch.  We tried running wanted and for sale ads at one point but they didn't go over well but I do get inquiries from collectors searching for certain pieces and love to help out when I can - that is how I built my collection.  A lot of Shawnee friends and also cookie jar collectors who found Shawnee for me while I found assorted cookie jars they were for - it definitely comes back ten fold and life long friendships along the way.
Regarding the V in the Puss N Boots jar front feet, I had a note from a collector referencing it - wondering if it is a pattern with the long tail being that mold or if it comes in both molds.

"I own both of these jars and the one with the V has the long tail as the other is known as the short tail.

I also have noticed Muggsy comes in the same differences but I've never known the reason for that difference.

Thanks for a great site!"
  Another note from a collector:

"Have a really good friend here in the Indiana area who has a booth in an antique mall for about the last 13 years. States Shawnee is getting stronger -- sold several minis lately -- over the last 3 months.  Also, recently sold a Fern cookie jar and canister!!"
Good to hear the line is getting more stable - definitely has been a buyers market rather than a seller.  Only the speculative collector sells a lot - the rest of us tend to hoard our collections as so hard to come by.  I recall a conversation with Mark Supnick years ago about the market value of the pottery when he cautioned how prices could fluctuate substantially - this when I was paying top money - I have always felt I would pay whatever it takes for some pieces but told him if the Smiley cookie jars ever dropped to $25 I'd just be buying all the more.  I think it is that way when you truly love the pottery.

Doug had an inquiry on the elephant shakers on the cover of the Mangus Shawnee book. I attempted to reach Bev Mangus to confirm what I recall about them from years back when their book was first released. What I recall is they had confirmation of them being Shawnee. In fact, the set shown belongs to Bev's sister and have eluded Bev and Jim for YEARS. No idea if they ever added them to their collection but when I speak with her I will give an update in the newsletter. Funny how we can set our sights on a particular piece and it will take years and sometimes never gets into our collection!!!!!
Question to Doug - "In the Jim & Bev Mangus book, page 224, at the bottom has a set of Elephants. Typically one would think this is an error, must be American Bisque/pottery. But If you look closely they are not like any I have seen. In fact I have never seen a set like these. The bow ties are different and the legs are positioned different, so do they really exist?"
Just add to the confusion, in the early 90's I saw a large set that looked like these. At the time didn't have a Shawnee book and didn't like the price so passed on them. At times you just have to listen to that gut feeling.   Doug
These are listed under small shakers in the Mangus book.

I received this note recently -

"There's an auction coming up on November 9th in PA that has quite a bit of Shawnee. Strangely, they've put everything in large lots which will probably limit online bidding due to high shipping costs, but could be good for in-house bidders. Thought you might like to have this for the Newsletter. Here's a link to the catalog on LiveAuctioneer:
