Shawnee Tales
Mar 2013
Where is this year going???  Hard to believe we are in the third month already!!!  Arizona has had some  excitement this past week - the Valley had snow, I have lived here since I was a kid, over fifty years and never has this happened - our new ball park was a solid white out.

Not sure how many of you are on Facebook? Barb Crews of the Cookie Jar Net posted a question as to which five jars would you take if you could only take five when leaving under emergency circumstances - would love to hear from our readers as to what their five most favorite jars would be!

Last month we featured a gold decorated Tom the Pipers Son teapot which had sold - it had decorative circles on the front - I heard from a friend of the buyer who confirmed it was authentic.  Always new discoveries out there to be found. In fact there is a Granny Ann teapot listed by a Canadian seller with an odd lid - very unusual - not particularly pretty by Shawnee standards. Mine came on a gold Granny Ann, this one is on a lavender plain base - will include a picture.
Priced low but the shipping from Canada is $26, which really ups the cost. Auction will be closed by the time this newsletter is posted - Item number  300864113976
Sometimes I have to wonder what the decorators were thinking.
Heard from a couple in Colorado after last months newsletter who collect Shawnee.

"Joan’s mother gave her a muggsy cookie jar in about 2004. She accidentally purchased a Dutch boy and girl stove top salt and pepper shaker when we lived in San Diego but had no idea what they were, only that they looked ‘cute’. After the cookie jar gift, we visited with my sister in Ohio and
noted that she had a good collection of pottery, mostly Roseville, but did have a good quantity of Shawnee salt and pepper shakers. On are trip back from that visit in 2006, we started collecting and it just grew from there. We now have a Winnie, a Puss n Boots, and Dutch Girl cookie jars, and many salt and pepper shakers to match the cookie jars. You are correct, it is an addiction!!!  I have pictures of our collection somewhere on this computer and when I find them, I’ll send it to you."

Ron Brown, a long time collector (formerly of North Dakota, now Illinois) has been here in the Valley visiting his daughter's family - I think he has covered every antique mall/shop in a hundred mile radius. He has a good eye and collects the mini's - he must have all of them now. He mentioned the auction on Ebay several years ago where someone listed a set complete with original box and it validated many of the miniatures Shawnee made, wish I had a picture of the listing. Maybe one or our readers has this picture to share????

Another reader shared his start in collecting with me.

" I have been collecting for about 10  years I guess. I am Native American (Lakota Sioux) and came across theShawnee arrowhead ashtray in an antique store. I didn't know who made it, and it took me awhile to find it in reference books. When I finally found it in the Shawnee book, I started going through the pages and loved what I saw. I guess what I also liked is the fact that these pieces were never meant as high end pieces, but managed to survive 60-70 years plus, and still look just as good as when they were  made. I collect larger pieces, generally cookie jars and teapots or pitchers. My area is definitely filled with antique stores, but I'm finding that the dealers who are selling pieces are  unwilling to budge on their prices. They would rather sit on an item for months and even years at a time, rather than get the money they *think* it's worth. I have had  muchmore luck at auction houses.  I picked up a Sailor boy with gold trim in mint condition for $190.00 awhile back, and he even has the label  intact. I don't expect to always have that luck, but it gives me incentive. "

What a terrific first find the arrowhead ash tray is!!!!!  It is always fun to hear how collectors begin their  collection. The first piece is just the beginning. Always love to share stories and pictures of collections so don't hesitate to write.
Until next  month.
